ME PhD Graduate Wins Prestigious Award at OMAE 2014

Mechanical Engineering PhD Graduate Nathan Tom received the prestigious OMAE Subrata Chakrabarti Young Professional award at the 2014 Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering Conference (OMAE) in San Francisco. This all-conference award is presented to a young professional with the best paper and presentation of the conference’s previous year. Tom conducted his PhD research in the CMML laboratory of ME Professor Ronald Yeung.

The OMAE Subrata Chakrabarti Young Professional Award, named in commemoration of the late Dr. Chakrabarti for his distinguished contribution to the conference series. The award recognizes both the originality and technical merit of the manuscript, and the delivery of the presentation. Tom's paper, "Non-Linear Model Predictive Control Applied to a Generic Ocean-Wave Energy Extractor" (OMAE2013-11247) was presented in the Ocean Renewable Energy Symposium of OMAE 2013, in Nantes, France. As part of the award, Tom, now a post-doctoral fellow at the National Renewable Energy Lab at Golden, Colorado, was invited to contribute a second paper at OMAE 2014, where he received his award on June 10, 2014. Tom majored in ocean engineering, and completed his PhD work in Ocean-Wave Energy under ME Professor Yeung. Previously, Tom received the Mechanical Engineering Department’s "Outstanding GSI Award" in spring of 2012.
